This makes a great difference. Now let me tell you one by one about SEO, its meaning, its effect on Ranking, how to get your site done with SEO work, from whom to get SEO and many others.
What is SEO ?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. This refers to the work being done in order to optimize the results in the search engines. SEO improves the ranking due to which, results are found at the top of Google pages. Also it improves PR (Page Rank). Also it will turn good traffic on the site. This includes various steps. However it takes time span of 1-several months to show its effect. Now let me tell you the steps to be followed in SEO.
- Choosing a right domain name and a reliable host is the first step.
- Get detailed market research and do know competitors.
- Choose relevant keywords carefully, do not put up un-relevant keywords. One may also look for some keyword research tool.
- URL and Directory structure should be kept simple. Text base navigation and interlink to various pages of the website should be used.
- Keywords should be used in Title, get important words highlighted, bold, italic etc.
- One should publish original content on his/her website rather than copying as it is bad for the ranking of the site.
- HTML sitemap of your site should be built as it acts like a content of a book. Also the xml sitemap of your site should be submitted to top search engines like Google, yahoo, etc.
- Get relevant links on your website from others.
- Avoid excess of linking. Also don't go for paid link exchange.
- Get links from blogs, forums and also look for social networking sites.
- Invisible text, keyword stuffing, targeting irrelevant keywords, broken links , page not found errors and others similar things should be avoided.
- Submit your site to top directories, relevant yellow pages and trade boards.
- If you are looking to hire a SEO specialist to get your site done with SEO then look to their own ranking and then also get an idea about their early experiences by searching on search engines.
Now this is all what comes under SEO. However many other effects also rules the effect of SEO. SEO is a short term work but its results may take time to show its effect.

Since I have got into the tech world late in life I am still wrestling with understanding much of this stuff but little by little I'll get it.

Very informative Hub. Thank you
Anuragweb18, just a suggestion, when using pics from the web it is a good idea to add the url or source. Read the learning center for more details about this. You are doing well, keep going.
Great Hub. The information here is really great. Please keep writing
'7. HTML sitemap of your site should be built as it acts like a content of a book. Also the xml sitemap of your site should be submitted to top search engines like Google, yahoo, etc.'
I've always wondered how to do that. Perhaps another hub anuragweb18?
Another suggestion to improve on a very good start to hubpages.
Add a news capsule or an rss feed from a relevant blog (perhaps after the comment capsule). Helps to bring new content to your hubs.
Keep up the good work
